Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest gainer was the Warhammer 40k precon rare Sister Hospitaller which shot up more than 1000% to over $18. As far as I can tell the reason for this sudden increase in demand is Hashaton, Scarab's Fist (borderless), the most played Commander from Aetherdrift, which is the only Commander deck in which Sister Hospitaller sees heavy play combined with hype for the Final Fantasy commander Terra, Herald of Hope where it offers a weird loop with Karmic Guide and a sacrifice outlet. Both reanimation creatures have power three or less which will, at worst, gain infinite life, and with an extra piece (like a Blood Artist) wins the game. We've seen in the recent past that Warhammer 40k spikes can stick - Reaver Titan went from $10 to $35 thanks to Aetherdrift's vehicle theme and so far is holding its higher price - which bodes well for Sister Hospitaller. Considering the uncertainty around how and when cards from Universes Beyond Commander precons can be reprinted, we might be reaching the point where cards from Warhammer 40k might be good buys.
Meanwhile our old friend Gilt-Leaf Archdruid's rise has continued. We talked last week about how it jumped up to $6 for no super obvious reason. Well, now the reason is obvious: Zombie Druid tokens in Tarkir: Dragonstorm. As such, Gilt-Leaf Archdruid spiked again this week and is now around $20! If you're planning to build Druids, you might as well hold onto your copies at this point, otherwise I think stealing all of your opponent's lands is a fringe enough strategy in Commander that it's probably worth selling into the hype.
Finally in stranger news, Fire-Lit Thicket, the Gruul filter land, is up to $35 after being around $20 a month ago and $10 a year ago. I had mostly written off filterlands as relevant cards: they don't really see play anywhere and maybe have been reprinted aggressively, but Fire-Lit Thicket has mostly dodged reprints, with just one in a Master set and one low-supply reprint as a Zendikar Expedition. This relative lack of supply has allowed Fire-Lit Thicket's price to rise, but I'd be looking to move my copies soon. Recently we've seen other members of the cycle, like Mystic Gate and Graven Cairns show up in Commander precons, dropping their prices below $8. It seems likely that this will happen to the rest of the cycle sooner or later.
